I made two steps forward. Silence.
I look sideways. You jump across.
I can’t make sense of it all. I search.
Black shadows everywhere, Rigid figures.
I move in the darkness. You do the same.
I have to take something you own. You hold to it tight.
Surrender! You deny and attack.
I walk slowly forward and I stop. I see the line clearer.
Is it allowed? I may fall.
Don’t be afraid, I tell myself,
And I move across your black and white squares.
